A New Kind of Hot Chicken, from Pecking House

pecking house

You’d never know that dessert is born of creative constraint; unable to bake, Huang devises stovetop confections, like a recent peanut-butter pudding with Concord-grape gelée and pretzel crumble that more than justifies itself. These days, moments of joy seem to arrive mostly by surprise, offering brief relief from the dull feeling that weeks and months are blurring together. It was Tsingtao, a pale lager, produced by China’s second-largest brewery, with an easy-drinking flavor profile that’s as carefully calibrated and comforting as Coca-Cola’s.

Pecking House is Open (but That’s Not the End of the Story)

Amidst decades of fast food chain ubiquity, we’ve gotten used to paying hysterically low prices for fried chicken. Simply put, animal protein wouldn’t be that inexpensive if it came from the kind of animal you’d knowingly want to eat. Often, what’s behind these savings are massive industrialized poultry farms, relying on economies of scale to deliver poultry at pennies per pound. The sort of animal husbandry practices that Michael Moore documentaries get made about. Finally, rather than a Nashville-style dunk in cayenne pepper, Huang’s chicken was passed through a less fiery—but far more nuanced—bath of ground, toasted Tianjin chilies, Szechuan peppercorns, salt, sugar, and MSG.

The ritzy Caviar Kaspia, a place to live out one’s Russian oligarchical fantasies, has announced a special jazz night on July 18. This is a lot of food.” Now that we have our permanent home, two pieces and one side is going to be the standard. It’s the right amount of food to not leave you feeling like total shit after. It was the fourth place we negotiated, and it needed a lot of work.

A Hong Kong Diner Pop-Up Is Coming to the West Village

The chiles aren’t as potent as habaneros but can exceed the spiciness of jalapenos on the Scoville scale by a factor of thirty. Is not usually a matter of formally changing the address, he added, it’s more about emphasizing what makes it unique. That may mean coming up with a clever new name for a property that doesn’t have one or preserving a significant existing name that has persevered through multiple changes of ownership. But simply adding or changing a house name won’t guarantee an increase in interest or value, particularly if it doesn’t reflect the home’s characteristics accurately. Homeowners should think carefully and select something that emphasises the nature of the property or highlights its most desirable qualities.

Once they had established protocols for outdoor dining and to-go orders, he turned to Peking House, his uncle’s restaurant in Queens, which belonged to Huang’s parents in the nineties and is where he spent much of his childhood. Getting back meant cooking around his college town outside of Chicago, pivoting to culinary school and eventually working as sous chef at Eleven Madison Park when it was still synonymous with excellence rather than disgrace. Huang left that post in early 2020 without plans to become NYC’s most popular fried chicken purveyor. In the U.S., too, house names can add to a property’s overall appeal, according to Santiago Arana, principal at the Agency in Los Angeles. The Old Rectory and the Old Vicarage, for example, featured in the top five most expensive house names, and commanded average prices of £1.3 million and £1.08 million, respectively. In Los Angeles, Pecking House will serve a $30 meal with three pieces of chicken, dirty fried rice, and a butter bean salad.

According to owner Stephanie Wilson, Carey runs up a tab of $10,000 a week. “I grew up in a Chinese American restaurant, and spent a great deal of my childhood there. And so I always kind of loved being in restaurants,” Huang says. After two successful years of takeout, delivery and pop-ups, it's a nest of the restaurant's own.

A New Kind of Hot Chicken, from Pecking House

Walk-ins are accepted, plus there’s delivery on UberEats and pre-order on Tock. Some might see the opening of Pecking House’s first bricks-and-mortar restaurant at 244 Flatbush Avenue in Park Slope as the happy ending to an inspiring story. But for Eric Huang and Maya Ferrante, the team behind Pecking House, that story’s just beginning. Now with a home, a kitchen, and outlandish luxuries like functioning ovens, they’re about to prove that their fetishized fried chicken is no one hit wonder. For vegetarians, Huang subs cauliflower for the chicken, achieving a texture that’s custardy yet sturdy enough to hold up to the batter.

If you’re looking to skip the spice, they also have a new chicken option with a salted egg crust slathered in a relish that has a nice pickled taste. You won’t be disappointed by any of the sides, but make sure to include the rich, flavorful duck heart gravy mashed potatoes. More than a few folks are aware of Pecking’s poultry mastery. Huang — who worked at fine dining spots like Cafe Boulud, as well as his family’s Chinese restaurant on Long Island — attracted a 10,000-person waitlist when he started the business as a pandemic pop-up.

I never want to have any sort of arrogance about our success, but I think having that kind of meal delivered—it was so special to people.” Ferrante wasn’t yet willing to work in Huang’s small kitchen during COVID—but she wanted to help. She stepped in to work on deliveries, and the pair have been working together ever since. I hadn’t realized how much I missed it until I opened a bag of food dropped off by Eric Huang, the impressively pedigreed Taiwanese-American chef behind a new takeout-and-delivery operation called Pecking House. Two bottles were packed in ice, keeping the beers crisp and cold; my first sip felt like a portal to a former life. It was delicious on its own and a consummate foil for the salty, fiery seasoning on Huang’s singular fried chicken, the centerpiece of what is essentially a meat-and-three meal.

But please, to honor the sacrifice of those who waited months for the chile chicken in the early days, get the chile chicken. The sting of the chiles and the buzz of Sichuan peppercorns at first recall a classic rendition of la zi ji, a Chongqing-style fry. But the way Huang paints every nook and cranny with oil is more in line with a proper Nashville bird.

If approved, the proposal will be included in the Port's budget for FY2023 (October 1, 2022, thru September 30, 2023). FY23 was marked by increased cruise shipping traffic and stronger-than-expected, cruise-related revenues (including from parking) estimated at US$150,87 million. This represented ~83,7% of Port Canaveral's total projected operating revenue (US$180,35M) including from cargo shipping/handling, recreation, leasing, and other business activities. It was estimated that the Port's FY23 will have US$75,43M profit (including non-operating revenues and expenses) which was US$53,36M before FY23's budget began. The profit was used for port development projects and for reducing debt from previous projects. Port Cape Canaveral (locode USPCV) is located on Florida's Atlantic coastline, between Miami and Jacksonville.

Port Canaveral and the nearby area have outlets for major car rental companies, all serviced by shuttles to the port terminals. If you are sailing Royal Caribbean, you will take a right after exiting from the main road into the port. Once you exit, you will loop around to your right, before heading back south — the direction from which you originally came into the port. This will take you through a point where you can drop off passengers or luggage.

Once at the terminal, it’s all about having my documents ready and following the easy-to-navigate steps towards embarkation. Past the compass and the photo sets is the general waiting area. If you come to the terminal and it’s not quite ready for passengers, CT 3 has room for 1,200 cruise passengers in this area, on either side of the main hallway. Arriving at the terminal, you start to get a sense of the size of the facility. Given the size of Mardi Gras, a large terminal was needed to service the ship and the more than 10,000 passengers that could be embarking and debarking in a single day. To handle that traffic, the terminal is 185,000 square feet, making it the largest at Port Canaveral.

Among it’s standout features are two exciting water slides, including an enclosed slide and the Twister, an open slide that promises exhilarating thrills for those seeking an adrenaline rush. Once you exit, you will continue straight (there will be signs directing you) to head to the Carnival cruise terminals. As you continue straight, you will pass directly in front of the terminals, giving you a chance to drop off passengers or luggage.

The “A” terminal is where the large cruise ships — Disney, Royal Caribbean, and Carnival — make their home. You will take this exit to your right and make a large loop around. Once you make the loop, you will see the cruise ships almost directly ahead of you. Canaveral Port Authority Commissioners approved US$1,2 million in funding for CH2M Engineering's project management contract. This was Phase I of the 2-year work plan to construct a modern facility with capacity to serve vessels with max capacity 8000 passengers. Port Canaveral’s proximity to Orlando gives access to theme parks and Space Coast attractions, such as the Kennedy Space Center, making it a location that extends vacations with on-shore adventures. What catches my attention next is the variety of retail outlets. From travel essentials to luxury goods, all shopping needs are accounted for. Whether I’m looking for a new pair of sunglasses or some Carnival-branded gear to showcase my cruise spirit, I’ll find it here. On either side of this you’ll find numerous alcoves, each with a large curved image of the ship.

The facility is on the site of "Cruise Terminal 3" (port's southern / B side), west of Jetty Park and east of The Cove (dining-shopping-attractions complex). On June 7, 2017, engineering and design works for the new terminal were officially approved. In late-April 2017, Port Canaveral started construction works on a new cruise terminal. In December 2017, Carnival Cruise Lines announced the homeporting of Carnival Elation in 2019.

Norwegian Epic Cruise Ship Deck Plans Norwegian Cruise Line

norwegian epic cruise line

Whatever you choose to do, Norwegian Epic is sure to dazzle. Awarded Best Cruise Ship Entertainment by Frommer’s, Norwegian Epic keeps the bar high with Burn the Floor. Not only is Norwegian Epic offering world-class performers but a new wave of accommodations as well - from Studios, designed and priced for the solo traveler, to privacy in The Haven. Add a wide variety of dining options and you'll understand why this is Freestyle Cruising on a truly grand scale. Balcony cabins in deluxe categories are with curved walls (aka “wave balcony”).

Entertainment

The vessel is exactly 32% smaller by GT in comparison to Royal Caribbean's (and world's) largest Oasis-Class ships. NCL Epic's SplashGolf was designed by Adventure Golf Services (a company specializing in the design and construction of mini-golf courses). The facility was installed in October 2015, during the ship's drydock refurbishment in Brest France. Instead of traditional solid mini-golf balls, SplalshGolf's balls are larger-sized and floating.

The Spa Balcony and Club Balcony have nearly identical floor plans as the regular balcony cabins but have a more “serene” decor and upgraded bathroom accessories. Most importantly, any stateroom marketed as a “Spa” room has unlimited access to the Thermal Spa Suites (Mandara Spa) included in the cruise fare. (Available on Norwegian Escape, Breakaway Class ships, Norwegian Bliss, and Norwegian Epic) You can see more about the Spa Staterooms on NCLs website. The ship offers two separate main pools (with four hot tubs), a kiddy pool area and a pool for suite guests. Norwegian Epic Spa Mini-Suites with a Balcony can accommodate up to three guests.

Caribbean

Learn how Norwegian Cruise Line takes care of your every need with an extensive list of onboard services. If you can get over the layout of the cabins and bathrooms, the rest of the ship is great. In addition to the outdoor activities, there’s an indoor bowling alley, Ice bar, video games, library, casino, theater, nightclub, shopping, and more. There is a downside to the Thermal Suite on the Epic, however. It’s stated that the pass is only sold to a limited number of passengers, but I’ve experienced otherwise, unfortunately. Not much to say about the pool bar, other than it’s convenient when you’re at the pool or in the Garden Cafe for a quick bite.

The current third-largest is Oasis of the Seas from Royal Caribbean, which boasts a maximum occupancy of 6,780 passengers and a gross tonnage of 226,838 GT. In September 2008, a dispute over the price of the first F3 vessel (at the time approximately 25% complete) arose between Norwegian Cruise Line and STX France. Reportedly, the sale of 50% of NCL to Apollo Management in August 2007 resulted in Apollo making several changes to the designs, resulting in a higher cost for the first vessel. A dispute between NCL and STX initially resulted in the construction of both ships being placed on hold until a new agreement was reached. The 2010-built Norwegian Epic cruise ship belongs to a unique vessel class and has no sisters by design. NCL Epic was the fleet's largest vessel until the arrival of the new Breakaway-Plus class ships.

Parents are advised to sign up their children when they board. The kids engage in a variety of activities in the dedicated program areas and throughout the ship. With plenty of activities for guests of all ages, Epic is ideal for families. Children have access to the dedicated clubs and adults will find solitude in the adult-only Spice H2O area.

When you book with one of our partners, please be sure to check their site for a full disclosure of all applicable fees as required by the U.S. Epic has lively bars like Shaker’s Martini bar and Maltings Sports Bar. One of the most interesting bars is the Ice Bar, where the entry fee includes two complimentary drinks. Guests don insulated capes before venturing into this cool spot. Events, like martini, wine or whiskey tastings, take place at the bars throughout the ship. Complimentary restaurant options consist of three main dining rooms – Manhattan, Taste and Savor.

Cabin Overview

You can also chow down on plenty of Irish comfort foods, including prime rib and all-you-can-eat ribs. Shaker's Martini Bar is the perfect spot to unwind at night with a martini or two. If these aren't enough to keep you busy every night, you'll also find a Teppanyaki restaurant and Wasabi sushi and yakitori bar.

To get your cruise ship planning started, here is a look at some of the exciting activities, dining options, and things to do you'll find on board Norwegian Epic. Norwegian Epic was the first ship to include The Haven when it was built, and it's now more luxurious than ever. Extensive renovations were completed during the recent refurbishment, including redesigned suites and experiences.

Norwegian Epic was planned as the flagship of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Epic class. Two ships for the class were ordered in November 2006 (including Norwegian Epic), with the option for a third vessel from the same shipyard, STX Europe Chantiers de l’Atlantique. New evening entertainment options are also introduced at the ship’s theatre (deck 5). Among those are the musical “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” and the Broadway-style dance show “Burn the Floor”. Studio passengers enjoy exclusive access to the Studio Lounge (indoor relaxation and dining venue). If it's live music you're after, consider stopping by Howl at the Moon.

Before you experience “Freestyle Cruising” with Norwegian check out this photo gallery which features many of their ships, specialty dining options and innovative staterooms. See our 360-degree photos of the large balcony cabins on the Epic. Because of the ship layout and strange angles of the exterior, you will end up (usually) with a balcony that may be 50% larger but not as enjoyable. For one, you end up looking into the neighbor’s balcony/cabin when stepping out to the railing. So the reality is there is no benefit to the larger balcony staterooms on the Epic. The Spice H20 lounge is outside as well, and is adults-only, with its own pool and two hot tubs.

With so much going on, Norwegian Epic is a cruise ship with broad appeal. The ship was one of the first at sea to be referred to as Las Vegas-esque and it's no wonder. Since May 2015, the Norwegian Cruise Line charges US$7,95 for room service dining. This is an extra service charge implemented fleetwide (including on the NCL Epic ship). Passengers exempted from the new (uncommon for the industry) room service fee are only the occupants of “The Haven” suites. Still, as an exception, all passengers can order (for free) their room-service morning coffee and Continental Breakfast.

Cruisers always have the option of dressing up or not and for some, a cruise is the perfect time to dress-up. The full gamut of appropriate styles will be seen in the more formal dining rooms on the ship. Norwegian’s Night Out is one of the optional nights for dressing up and the White Party is another popular event to wear all white – or not! Mandara Spa offers a variety of services including acupuncture and medi-spa services. The spa is pleasant with treatment rooms, a beauty salon and a thermal spa area. Guests not staying in a Spa category cabin will need to pay an additional charge to make use of the thermal spa area.

Again, however, on a recent cruise, there were more misses than normal, especially in specialty dining. I believe this is temporary due to all of the supply chain issues. After a planned Transatlantic in December 2022 on the Epic, I’ll confirm if the dining has improved. Pools, a waterslide, an aqua park, a rock climbing wall, and huge sun decks are among the many things to do on the Epic. The Family staterooms are simply rooms that are closer to activities for children and many are connected rooms. The biggest change for the NCL Epic in 2024 is the cancellation of the Pricilla Queen of The Desert theater show.

One said that the rooms weren't ready yet so I should bring all my stuff upstairs and have lunch at the buffet, while another said I should go see if my room was ready and drop my things off. I took the second person's advice, found my room all ready to go and started unpacking. I was also keeping a close eye on the controversy that had unfolded shortly before the cruise.

INDEPENDENCE OF THE SEAS

I was assigned to D014, an oceanview room on the fourth floor near the front of the ship. Inside, I found two single beds (which could be pushed together to create a larger bed), two closets, a desk, a floor-to-ceiling mirror, a mini-fridge, an in-room safe and a large, window-sized port hole to check out the view. Bayside Marketplace, across from the port, is a popular waterfront shopping spot for visitors. Lincoln Road Mall spans 10 blocks of shops— and Miracle Mile is a long string of specialty stores. Cruise to Miami and head to Calle Ocho for hand-stitched guayabera shirts and hand-rolled Cuban cigars. Carnival has more than 100 Cuba sailings scheduled through 2020, embarking from seven different U.S. cities.

The Captain came on the loudspeaker constantly to remind us to wash our hands after using the restroom and after touching any railings, elevator buttons or door handles — we were even asked not to shake hands with anyone, just in case. In the end, the virus was contained and only about a dozen out of 700+ people aboard suffered symptoms. At the Pacific Restaurant, and on most traditional-style cruises, you'll be led to a large table full of strangers to dine with — it sounds intimidating but was extremely welcome as I was traveling solo and it was an easy way to meet my fellow passengers.

Unveiling the Secrets: Do All Dentists Charge the Same?

Unveiling the Secrets: Do All Dentists Charge the Same?

The cost of dental care can vary significantly depending on several factors, including the type of service, the location of the dental practice, and the experience of the dentist. As a result, it is not accurate to state that "all dentists charge the same price."

Several factors contribute to the variation in dental fees. For instance, cosmetic procedures such as teeth whitening or veneers tend to be more expensive than basic treatments like cleanings or fillings. Additionally, dentists practicing in areas with a higher cost of living may charge more for their services to cover their operating expenses. The expertise and reputation of the dentist can also influence pricing, with more experienced and well-respected dentists often commanding higher fees.
